Jim Nantz Defends His Buddy Phil Simms

Jim Nantz and Phil Simms did the Pittsburgh-Baltimore game on CBS earlier today. Late in the game they cut to studio where Boomer Esiason was recapping the Philadelphia-St. Louis game. Esiason took a friendly shot at Simms by saying “Phil didn’t have an arm like that,” while a replay of a Michael Vick touchdown was played. Upon returning to the booth, Jim Nantz replied in a true kiss ass manner by saying that “Phil is shining his two Super Bowl rings.”

Nantz will probably be a frequent topic on this site because of his self-important nature. Both he and Simms were accused of New England Patriots bias last January. It should be no surprise that he lectured a national audience after the Jets Shonn Green celebrated a late game touchdown against the Patriots in the Jets playoff victory at Gillette Stadium. “I’ve never understood the absurdity of all the self-aggrandizing, and now you’re going to cost your team 15 yards on the kick and you’re going to give Brady and his unit a chance to do something”,” Nance said

Wasn’t that statement about Simms a little “self-aggrandizing” Jim? The way Nantz phrased his criticism made me want to defend the indefensible hot dog antics of Greene.

Of course, when you criticize Nantz its “inflammatory” and “over the top.” If “he talked like that on the air, people would say that he’s being a little bit … too strong.”

Of course, no one can recite Bette Midler’s “The Rose” like Nantz. Oh, and according to Esiason he has bad breath.

By the way Jim, Simms has two Super Bowl rings, but Jeff Hostetler had a lot to do with the second one.
